  • Tuck It In: Hibernation for Rattan Furniture.

One of the big selling points of rattan furniture is that it can be left outdoor for varied weather conditions, but we still recommend that you buy a cover for your rattan furniture when not in use, especially now the Winter is fast approaching.

    High vs low quality rattan

High quality synthetic rattan garden furniture does not necessarily need covering in any weather especially the ones made from HDPE (High Density Polyethylene). HDPE rattan garden furniture has many advantages; it will not mould, it is UV resistant and will not fade in the sunlight nor go brittle in snow or ice. The rattan is hand woven over rust proof powder coated aluminium frames ensuring your furniture will not rust. And being lightweight, it can be moved easily to suit your particular location or position. This HDPE rattan furniture is maintenance free and can be easily cleaned with just warm soapy water.

There are many inexpensive, low quality synthetic rattan furniture ranges available today. Retailers will not usually guarantee them for a long time because they know it will not last long. These types of furniture will need covering in all weather conditions as the dye colour is only applied to the outside of the rattan whereas the colour on a high quality HDPE rattan weave is incorporated throughout the polyethylene. The poorer quality material is also more prone to splitting and breaking whenever hard frost hits.

    The advice.

If you want your rattan furniture to retain its shining look for longer, then our advice would be to cover them when not in use. Just like anything else when left unkempt, it depreciates quicker than necessary. Buying a rain cover large enough to blanket your entire rattan suite will prevent it from being blown around in high winds, and from being covered with dirt.

We recommend that before covering your furniture, you place a mop stick or any stick through the parasol hole in the centre of the table if your furniture comes with a hole at the centre of the table; this creates a tent-like shape, which will shed the water away from your furniture easily.

    The cushions

The cushions on good quality synthetic rattan garden furniture are usually weather proof, and the same goes for any bought separately from any good retailer but they still need to be stored away during winter. They will shrug off a light shower in summer and soon dry up when the sun re-appears, but they may get wet during heavy rain. And when there is no sunlight for days to quickly dry up, the inner foam will become saturated and runs the risk of becoming mouldy, which will leave it with a musty smell that is difficult to remove.

We recommend you clean your cushions according to the manufacturer’s instructions before storing them away, making sure they are completely dry.

  • Need to Know: Is Rattan Furniture Actually Comfortable?

With temperatures looking decidedly more August this weekend, this can only mean it’s time to help Moda give rattan a comeback.  And we’re predicting that it will come back in a BIG way.  There are few materials as versatile as rattan, which means it can work in nearly any indoor or outdoor space.  Rattan furniture is often dubbed ‘boho chic’ by nature, but Moda knows it can be worked into many contemporary, coastal, or glam spaces too.

Between all of the outdoor picnics, soirees, and al fresco dinners still remianing on your summer agenda, you’re bound to cross paths with your share of rattan chairs this before Autumn draws in.  But, we get asked the same question all the time – are rattan chairs actually comfortable?

    Moda Favourites:  Rattan Chairs

Surprisingly, woven rattan chairs are more comfortable than they look.  Most rattan chairs have minimal cushioning (or sometimes, no cushion at all), but they are formed to cradle your body.  (It’s almost like sitting in a chair that was made just for you!)  Not only do these chairs look cool, but we think they’ll be in high demand at your next gathering because they are unexpectedly comfortable.

We absolutely adore the Vase Stacking Set at Moda, available in four different weave colours, they’re a great addition to gardens of any shape and size and will even chic up a balcony.

And the sculptural, body hugging frames of the Zen Rattan Sofa set  cradles you as you sit and enjoy the last of the August Sun. Get yourself a cocktail and we guarantee you and your guests will never leave your chairs.

Rattan chairs might not be everyone’s idea of comfort and lounging, but we give them two thumbs up when it comes to combining style and comfort.  Looking to update your seating this summer?  Contact Moda today.

  • Is Choosing Rattan Furniture An Eco-Friendly Choice?

If you’re anything like us, you know that there’s nothing better than sitting outside in the summer; al fresco dining somehow makes food and wine much tastier. But for those of you who are environmentally-conscious (and let’s face it, who isn’t these days?) did you know there are plenty of ways to eat in comfort without having a negative effect on the environment?

Rattan furniture is arguably the most popular decorative item for gardens, patios, balconies and hotel gardens across the western world and even further afield. The material’s sturdy, weather-resistant nature and low maintenance requirements make it a firm favourite and as a result, both natural and synthetic rattan is a common sight.

As a short history lesson, there are around 600 different species of rattan in the world, 54 of which originating from the Indo-China region. A climbing member of the palm family, its stems offer a multitude of uses even further than the west such as in furniture and baskets in large parts of Asia, as well as housing.

However, as the popularity of rattan garden furniture retains it crown season to season, so too do questions surrounding its sourcing. Home-owners naturally find themselves curious about certain aspects of this material, such as its build quality, the manufacturing process, or even whether it is a ‘green’ material. Indeed, one particular question has become more and more common among home-owners in recent years: is rattan furniture eco-friendly? In a day and age where natural resources become more depleted with each passing day, and every effort is valuable in ensuring the environment is not actively damaged, it comes as no surprise that home-owners might want to know whether their favourite type of outdoor furniture is sustainable.

So, is rattan furniture eco-friendly? The short answer is yes. Both natural and synthetic variants of rattan are sustainable from an environmental perspective:

    Synthetic Rattan

Synthetic materials are usually regarded with suspicion when it comes to environmental sustainability, even when, as with rattan furniture, this is one of the main selling points employed by manufacturers and retailers.
Thankfully, rattan garden furniture is one of few examples where claims about synthetic material being entirely eco-friendly and environmentally sound are both accurate and easy to back up. Most synthetic rattan items are made from materials specially treated to ensure they do not harm the environment – for example by releasing toxins into the air or soil immediately surrounding the item. As such, home-owners thinking of buying such items need not worry that the synthetic fibres at their root will have a detrimental impact on the environment; every synthetic rattan garden furniture item available on the market is guaranteed to be entirely eco-friendly and environmentally safe.

    Natural Rattan Furniture

Perhaps even more than with synthetic rattan, the question of eco-friendliness seems to arise about items made from the actual material extracted from palm trees. The good news is, as far as naturally-sourced materials are concerned, rattan is one of the safest from an environmental standpoint. While the palm tree the material is derived from is geographically limited in location, rattan itself is easily renewable, and the impact its sourcing has on the environment is almost negligible.

Actually, rather than harm the environment, rattan can be considered to have the opposite effect insofar as it is used as a replacement for wood wicker in many furniture items. This, in turn, helps preserve forests by reducing the need to source wood from trees, preventing deforestation and logging. Additionally, this plant is often found in floodplains, which attracts animal populations and makes use of soil which would otherwise go unused. The harvesting and sourcing of rattan also helps provide jobs for inhabitants of the areas of the world the material is commonly found at, helping to both boost and maintain a sustainable economy.

It is clear, then, that when it comes to the sustainability of natural rattan garden furniture, home-owners have even less cause for concern than they would with items made from the synthetic variant.

  • The History of Garden Furniture

Everything we see, touch or learn about has some kind of a history to it. Coffee cups have a history, wood has a history and garden furniture has a history. Here at Moda Furnishings, we are interested in the history of our range of garden furniture, which why we’ve decided to dedicate this blog to just that…

    Greek Era

The garden itself was created shortly after the Claudian Invasion of 43CE and introduced designs like hedges and fences being combined with orchards. It is said that garden furniture can be traced back to the Roman and Greek eras where people we known to sit upon stone benches in these new outdoor gardens. In fact, evidence of these were found in Pompeii and are thought to be the oldest surviving examples.

    Medieval Era

During this time gardening was not a major concern however some progress in the history of garden furniture still took place and the turf bench became a recognisable aspect of a medieval garden. They rose in likeability through the art they had featured on them in the 15th century.

    Elizabethan Era

The introduction of the 17th century saw landscaping, gardening and design become more common in Europe and it was thought that a well-constructed garden controlled natures wrath. With urban spaces growing, the demand for seating that would remain day and night did too which led to the creation of the Windsor chair. Civil areas like parks in the 19th century added to this demand and eventually the ‘park bench’ that we know of today emerged.

    21st Century

With modern life the concept of outdoor furniture has bloomed in ways the Greek could’ve only imagined and thanks to electricity allowing for more outdoor events to take place, the need for garden furniture has become much more popular. Plus, the range of colours, styles and materials that have developed means that we are spoilt for choice when it comes to garden furniture.

Learning all about something is always exciting and it’s odd to find out how much happened in the past to provide us with the things we have today. • Let’s Talk About Rattan

Contrary to belief, rattan can actually be used in two forms; natural and man-made. In terms of natural rattan, there are around 600 difference species of the palms which are native to certain regions of Africa and Asia. It can be distinguished by its slender stems that tend to be 2-5cm in diameter- however it is not a tree but more of a vine. In this blog, the team here at Moda Furnishings are going to talk about all things rattan related…

If you were to glance at it, rattan is a very similar to bamboo however unlike a bamboo shoot, it is not hollow from the inside and a rattan stem needs additional support in order to stand tall. It is thought that around 75% of rattan plants grow in Indonesia and the majority is grown in what are called secondary forests, which are where most of the trees are young in age and the forest floor light levels are higher. Rattan is a plant that climbs and can even grow to 100 metres in length.

One of the main attractions of rattan is its versatility which means that it can be easily moulded into different looks. It is a lightweight material which looks great indoors and outdoors and is widely known for its use in the furniture industry.
